Individual Taxation

Work-Related Deductions, Claimed Correctly

Claim everything you're entitled to — and nothing you're not. We help you understand which expenses qualify and keep the records that support them.

Overview

How we can help

Work-related deductions are one of the areas the ATO reviews most closely. Over-claiming can lead to amendments and penalties, while under-claiming means paying more tax than you need to.

We look at the expenses relevant to your occupation, check they meet the ATO's requirements and help you set up simple record-keeping so next year is even easier.

Good to Know

Key things to know

  1. 01

    The three golden rules

To claim a work-related deduction you must have spent the money yourself and not been reimbursed, the expense must directly relate to earning your income, and you must have a record to prove it.

  2. 02

    Private use must be removed

If something is used for both work and private purposes — such as a phone, laptop or car — you can only claim the work-related portion.

  3. 03

    Travel between home and work

Normal trips between home and your regular workplace are generally private and not deductible, even if you work outside normal hours.

FAQs

Common questions

General information only. Your circumstances may differ — contact us for advice specific to you.

Do I need receipts for every claim?

Generally yes — you need written evidence such as receipts, invoices or bank records, and some claims have specific requirements, like a logbook for car expenses or a record of hours for working from home.

Can I claim a laptop I bought for work?

Yes, to the extent it's used for work. Items costing $300 or less may be claimed immediately; more expensive items are generally depreciated over their effective life.

Can I claim a course I'm doing?

Self-education is generally deductible if it maintains or improves the skills you need in your current job. Study for a new career usually isn't. We can review your situation.
